Dynamic Mixing

Lateral agitation of the ATR platform between 2 Hz and 6 Hz

Cleaning

Simple disassembly allows access to all wetted parts for cleaning

Pressure Range

Vacuum ... 16 BarG as standard - contact us to discuss alternate ranges

Wide Pump Compatibility

Low pressure drops across the reactor tube assembly greatly expand the choice of pumps

The Coflore® Agitated Tube Reactor (ATR) is an actively mixed, tubular flow reactor operating from 0.35 L to 10 L in reactor volume, which has been developed for the multi-kilogram production of material at the pilot scale.

Configured of up to eight reactor tubes in series, with two reactor tube sizes of either 0.35 L or 1.25 L in volume available, the Coflore ATR flow reactor exhibits plug flow performance equivalent to many tens of CSTRs in series, with experimental data demonstrating well-over 100 theoretical stages.

Each of the eight reactor tubes can be heated or cooled independently of each other. Reagents can be added, and samples removed, at each end of each reaction tube, with up to 16 temperature measurement points available (2 per reactor tube).

The Coflore ATR can process a wide range of single- and multi- phase reaction mixtures including dense slurries without blocking, making it ideal for such processes as hydrogenation and Grignard reactions. Solids-dosing to the reactor can be fully automated, without the need for pumps in the process lines, for added ease-of-use and safety.

Check out our Publications page for tubular flow reaction examples.

A wide range of process connections are available

The Coflore ATR is a productive, versatile, and efficient plug flow reactor. Its unique mixing characteristics stem from the use of radial mechanical stirring rather than passive or diffusive mixing. This approach decouples plug flow and mixing from residence time, to give very low dispersion numbers, fast blending, and high shear.

The Coflore ATR tubular flow reactor is ideal for pilot-plant continuous processes prior to scale up, or for production scale (hundreds of kilos / tonnes). Processes developed on the smaller, R&D scale, Coflore ACR platform have a straight-forward path to scale up in the Coflore ATR plug flow reactor.

Compatible with a wide scope of chemical processes for residence times ranging from seconds to hours, the Coflore ATR is extremely versatile. A wide-range of reactions have been performed in the Coflore ATR including: hydrogenations; Grignard reactions; transesterifications; biocatalysis; nitrations and many more. Multi-phase mixtures including slurries and gases can be processed with low risk of blocking or fouling, making the ATR ideal for heterogeneous catalysis. Check out our Publications page for reaction examples.

The ATR is highly configurable, with variable working reactor volumes from 350 to 10,000 mL achieved through stacking up to eight reactor tubes on the ATR agitating platform. Each reactor tube has its own dedicated side ports that can be utilised as required, i.e. to house a thermocouple or for reagent injection into the reactor.

The ATR tubular flow reactor can be completely disassembled, through the reactor tubes, making all wetted surfaces and components easily accessible for cleaning.

Minimal set up is required to run chemistry in the ATR, with a low pressure drop enabling wide pump compatibility (including gear, diaphragm, syringe, peristaltic pumps and more).  The reaction residence time is determined by the pump flow rate and not the size or length of the reactor process channels, allowing the user to easily screen a range of residence times on demand. Mixing efficiency and plug flow performance is maintained by default, irrespective of flow rate.
